Dr. Bushong enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating high school. He attended basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. During service, he was stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina, Camp Foster in Okinawa Japan, and Camp Pendleton in California. He also served on a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in the Pacific. Dr. Bushong did two enlistments before separating from service as a sergeant (E5).
Here is Lee just outside of Pohang, South Korea. This photo was taken at the end of a long day doing a ship to shore amphibious movement. He is the third from the right.
Dr. Bushong dedicated time and effort to the restoration of the Iwo Jima monument in Cape Coral, Florida, just north of Veterans Blvd near the bridge. This famous statue was created by Felix De Weldon and he only made three of them. One is at Parris Island, one is at Quantico, and one is in Cape Coral. The Cape version was discovered in the old rose gardens and moved to the Veterans location. It was in such disrepair that the monument had to have significant and costly repairs. Here, you see Lee doing a media interview while raising awareness and money for this noble cause.
